Tuesday is the day that former sheriff Victor Hill will learn his fate when he appears before Judge Eleanor Ross in the U.S. Northern District of Georgia, where he will be sentenced on six counts of violating the civil rights of pretrial detainees under color of law. Hill has been scrambling to ensure his regime continues under his handpicked successor, Acting Sheriff Levon Allen, whose campaign has been fueled by the Hill machine and tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars.
As of Friday, March 11, only 6,474 Clayton County voters had cast early ballots in the county and state races. Various community activists have expressed concern that too few people are voting in these crucial elections, which will determine who controls the county jail and will restore representation to many voters at the Gold Dome, as well as decide whether to renew a one-cent sales tax for more school construction, computers, and the convocation center at Southlake Mall.
