The hottest ticket this week is free: the Clayton County Sheriff Candidate Forum. While the sheriff’s race is a hot-button issue, the special election for Jonesboro mayor is also sparking strong feelings. Add to the mix the resignation of State Rep. Mike Glanton and at least two people who have said they would run for District 75: Herman “Drew” Andrews and Eric Bell and you have a hot week in politics.

Here’s what else your elected officials are up to this week. Make sure you keep an eye on them and, above all, follow the money!
Monday, Jan. 30
- 5 p.m.: The Clayton County Board of Education holds its work session, starting with the executive session. On the agenda: a look at architectural renderings for the new Lovejoy High School and Mt. Zion High School buildings, as well as bids to demolish Forest Park Middle School, the old Riverdale Elementary School, and Group A (Forest Park, Charles Drew, and Mundy’s Mill High Schools) and Group B (Riverdale and Jonesboro High Schools) bids for improvements to athletic fields. Also look for personnel changes, first reads from Policy Series D (setting acceptable standards for indebtedness), E, and F, as well as reports on SPLOST construction, SPLOST revenue, finance, and purchasing.
Tuesday, Jan. 31
- 5:30 p.m.: The Morrow Convention and Tourism Association meets at Morrow City Hall, 1500 Morrow Road. On the agenda: “event update” and “revenue/expense report.”
- 7 p.m.: The Clayton County Sheriff Candidates Forum takes place at Tabernacle of Praise Church International, 7086 Tara Blvd., Jonesboro. All five candidates for sheriff have been invited. The forum is cosponsored by TOPCI and the Clayton County Democratic Party, Clayton County GA Republican Party, NAACP Youth Council, Clayton County Federation of Democratic Women, Teens 4 Justice, and Young Democrats of Clayton County. Each group will pose questions to the panel. Attania Jean-Funny will serve as moderator. Audience members also will be able to submit question cards.
Wednesday, Feb. 1
- 9 a.m.-5 p.m.: Qualifying for the House District 75 seat takes place at the Georgia at the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office, 2 MLK Jr. Drive, Suite 802, Floyd West Tower, Atlanta. The fee is $400. Mike Glanton resigned from the seat. The race will be added to the March 21 special election ballot.
- 1 p.m.: Clayton State University and the American Society for Public Administration Georgia Chapter host a free virtual public forum, “Cops and Courageous Conversations,” featuring Clayton County Solicitor-General Charles Brooks, District Attorney Tasha Mosley, and Police Chief Kevin Roberts, along with Dr. Jason Davis, chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. - 4:30 p.m.: The Jonesboro Design Review Commission meets at City Center (the new City Hall). On the agenda:
- a recommendation to approve repairs to the deck at 127 Jonesboro Road after a large oak tree in the middle of the deck fell. The events center is asking to put up a pergola with a plastic roof in its place.
- Approval of a new panel sign for Irie Beauty Locs at 186 North Avenue
- Approval of a new panel sign for Crystal Nail Lounge at 8003 Tara Blvd.
- Approval of a purple or pink ground sign for a new Mexican restaurant, Maxy’s, at 192 Jonesboro Road
- 5:30 p.m.: The Forest Park Development Authority meets. No agenda had ben published as of press time Monday.
Thursday, Feb. 2
