UPDATE 9:51 a.m. Aug. 31: Goree says site will host graduations

The Clayton County Board of Education voted 8-0 August 30 to buy the former Sears store at Southlake Mall in Morrow for $4.4 million.

After an executive session, the address, 1300 Southlake Circle, and the parcel number, 12112A A003, were announced and the board voted unanimously to buy the 15-acre property.

The current owner is TF Morrow, LLC, a Delaware corporation with the same Bay Harbor Island, FL address as ESL Investment Management (GP), LLC, a Florida Corporation managed by Edward S. Lampert, the former CEO and chair of Sears Holdings.

The FY 2021-2022 budget included $33.5 million for a new Morrow High School, along with another $1.5 million for furniture and $703,500 for design.

The Clayton Crescent asked CCPS to clarify what the property will be used for. Goree said in a Facebook post the following morning that the site would be used as a graduation facility.

CCPS’ Performing Arts Center, which was built in 1990 for $7.5 million, seats 1,798 people in the main auditorium configuration.
