the Georgia State Patrol is still investigating Monday’s two-car crash that killed Clayton County Police Ofc. Armondo Mendoza and left another man in critical condition.

Public Information Director Lt. W. Mark Riley of the Georgia Department of Public Safety shared this update with The Clayton Crescent:

“This accident is still under investigation and these are only the preliminary investigative results.

“On April 19, 2021, at approximately 9:47 a.m., the Georgia State Patrol was requested to investigate a two vehicle traffic accident at the intersection of Tara Boulevard and Main Street in Clayton County.  Vehicle #1, a silver Lexus ES330 driven by Hue Phan (81 years old), was traveling south on Tara Boulevard attempting to make a left turn onto Main Street.  Vehicle #2, a black Ford Crown Victoria, (Clayton County Police Department patrol car) driven by Officer Armando Mendoza (22 years old), was traveling north on Tara Boulevard.  Vehicle #1 failed to yield while turning left and struck vehicle #2 in the front left fender (driver’s side) area.  Officer Mendoza suffered fatal injuries from the crash.  Mr. Phan was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.  The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting with this crash investigation.  The accident report number is C000762763 and is incomplete at this time.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Mendoza’s family, loved ones, and the entire Clayton County Police Department.”
